The province of Syracuse is located in the very Southeast of Sicily. Not only can it boast a number of interesting towns, but also some very special natural monuments like the Pantalica area. Its thousands of Bronze Age burial sites were carved out of the rocks. The river Cyane is beautifully lined with Papyrus trees. Of old fame is the provincial capital Syracuse, the biggest and most powerful city in southern Italy in the ancient world. The infamous tyrant Dionys, immortalised by Schiller’s ballad The Guarantee (Die Buergschaft), originated from here. A gem of the Sicilian Baroque is the little town of Noto with its numerous Palazzi, churches and monasteries.
