The province of Caltanissetta stretches from the Sicilian hinterland to the South West coast. The most important centres of this mostly agricultural region are Caltanissetta and Gela. At the time of the ancient Greeks, Gela was one of the most important city states of Sicily. Today, it is surrounded by the mighty oil refineries. The glory of old can be recaptured in the archaeological museum with its numerous exhibits and in the excavation of the remarkable remains of the ancient city walls. The provincial capital Calatanissetta further inland is dominated by baroque architecture, has numerous boutiques and nice little shops, and a very pretty town market.
